A Surprise

On Thursday (yesterday) morning, I logged onto the internet and was pleased to see that UNC beat Florida State at the buzzer. I was even more pleased to see that Duke (the Evil Empire) lost to Wake Forest. Oh Happy Day! [First thing Thursday morning I was required to be excited about this event.]

Last night, as we left to meet Bill for tea before dinner, we were surprised to see our landlord outside – hanging around. I was anxious to ask him about the washing machine hook-up (I had it right) and to give him some mail that had been delivered. Carol asked again about the cable hook-up and he muttered something in Hungarian. Interestingly enough, we don’t understand Hungarian any better when they talk slower and louder just as they don’t understand English when we speak slower and louder. Funny how that works. Carol got out her calendar and pointed whereupon he said what sounded like “Tuesday.” When pressed a bit, he wrote some times down on Thursday the 29th, that very day. We all nodded and smiled and figured that our cable would be hooked up while we were in Budapest for the orientation next week. Oh well, the weekend without understanding what was on TV was not so bad – we have the internet to read any important news and tennis on Eurosport with Hungarian announcers.

We walked to Bill’s apartment, enjoyed a cup of tea, and then proceeded to the “Arizona Ranch” for dinner. The menu was quite extensive, the portions monstrous and the quality of the food excellent. Another great meal, tasty local beer, and what Carol reported was superb red wine.

We returned home and much to our surprise we had a new cable box on top of our TV, over 100 channels – 8 to 10 in English. There could be more – we’re not sure. On some channels, we have the ability to change audio to English – others we don’t. I’d love to read the large and informative instructions that were left for us – except they are in Hungarian. All in all, things are coming together very nicely.
